"My memory  is of no helmets, rather Foreign legion style caps with a bit of padding on the top...they were better than nothing, but not much! The wooden rackets, with leather net and cat-gut fence. I remember linseed oiling the wood and lard/dripping on the leather and gut."

" We used neatsfoot oil on ours and varnish/shelack on the fence (side) to stiffen and keep it upright"

"We used old style cricket gloves, the ones with small rubber spikes no other padding.
... and the leather boots with nail-in leather stops (studs). Often the nails went through the inner sole and that was another pain you had to ignore."
